CSS Design Controls and Criteria
Under Context Sensitive Solutions, new approaches are being developed to the application of criteria and standards so that streets and roads can better fit in their context.
- Design Flexibility and Exceptions
- The CSS process empowers designers to use the flexibility found within generally accepted design manuals. Topics include: Engineering Judgment, Performance Based Practical Design and Shared Spaces.
- Road Classification
- Road classification systems define functions and present design criteria for different types of streets and roads.
- Safety
- The issue of safety for all users is a fundamental goal inextricably related to all other CSS design controls and criteria.
- Accessibility
- CSS considers the function of streets and roads relative to their context in terms of access and mobility for all users.
- Speed
- Planning and designing streets, corridors and networks so vehicle speed is appropriate to a given function and context. Topics include: Traffic Calming, Traffic Calming and Target Speed.
- Road Capacity
- The CSS process allows designers to balance the need for capacity with other stakeholder goals. Reframing the challenge as moving people (not vehicles) allows for innovative and cost effective solutions to be realized.
