This section introduces the megaregion concept and identifies the 10 megaregions commonly cited in the United States. FHWA convened an internal working group to discuss how best to address the topics of megaregions and multijurisdictional planning. This working group, combined with years of research, led to the identification of five key issues, thereby establishing a megaregions framework for FHWA. The National Economic Partnership Pilots and the Megaregion Workshops discuss how best to address the specific issues of megaregions and multijurisdictional planning. The five key issues include: 1. Economic Vitality 2. Environment/Air Quality 3. Freight 4. Infrastructure/Congestion 5. Safety. Additional megaregional issues may include performance-based planning, livability, advanced travel modeling, border planning, governance, pooled funding, project prioritization, emerging technology and more.
