As mentioned in the Introduction, our County has a long history of compiling highway statistics dating back to at least 1893. Highway Statistics, an annual compendium of highway statistics in tabular form, has been published continuously since 1945. FHWA first published Our Nation’s Highways: Selected Facts and Tables in 1983 to provide a condensed, user-friendly overview of the data found in the much more exhaustive Highway Statistics. This edition of Our Nation’s Highways also falls on two important anniversaries: the 250th anniversary of the founding of our country and the 70th anniversary of our Interstate System. As we celebrate these milestones, we reflect on the significant progress that we have made as a Nation. Consider, for example, the 2024 Moving Numbers from the first chapter compared to 100 years earlier in 1924. FHWA hopes readers found this edition useful and also share our pride in the significant contributions made over the years to produce our world-class highway system.
