Figure 10-1. Form. Sensory Modality Design Tool. This tool will help designers develop the most appropriate display modality for presenting in-vehicle information. This figure is essentially a questionnaire for designers. Participants answers are based on a scale of very low, low, low, medium, high, and very high. Participants answer each question is answered based on the visual, auditory, and tactile sensations of the message. Different point values are given for each answer. The tool features the following five questions and their related point values.

  • Question one asks what is the degree of urgency of the message? For the visual modality of the message, four points are given for an answer of very low, three for low, two for medium, and one for high or very high. For the auditory and tactile modalities of the message, one point is given for very low, two for low, three for medium, four for high, and five for very high.

  • Question two asks to what degree might the message be referred to again later? For the visual modality, one point is given very low, two for low, three for medium, four for high, and five for very high. For the auditory modality of the message, four points are given for very low, three for low, two for medium, and one for high or very high. For the tactile modality of the message, four points are given for an answer of very low, two for low, and zero for medium, high, or very high.

  • Question three asks what is the overall level of complexity of the message? For the visual modality of the message, three points are given for answers of very low, low, or medium, four points for high, and five points for very high. For the auditory modality, four points are given for an answer of very low, three for low, two for medium, and one for high or very high. For the tactile modality of the message, four points are given for an answer of very low, one for low, and zero for medium, high, or very high.

  • Question four asks to what degree does the message deal with a future action in time? For the visual modality of the message, five points are given for an answer of very low, four for low, and three for medium, high, or very high. For the auditory modality, one point is given for an answer of very low, two for low, three for medium, four for high, and five for very high. For the tactile modality, zero points are given for an answer of very low, low, or medium; one point for high, and five points for very high.

  • Question five asks to what degree does the message refer to locations in space? For the visual modality, three points are given for an answer of very low, low, or medium; four points for high, and five points for very high. For the auditory modality, five points are given for an answer of very low, four for low, three for medium, two for high, and one for very high. For the tactile modality, five points are given for very low, one for low, and zero for medium, high, or very high.

Beneath the questions are spaces to fill in the IVIS message and other relevant factors and to fill in total scores in the three modalities visual, auditory, and tactile.

Figure 10-2. Form. Steps for Using the Sensory Modality Design Tool. The five steps for using the sensory modality design tool that was described in the proceeding figure are ordered in this figure. Step one is to identify and define the driver message. Step two is to determine the appropriate responses to question one. Respondents choose only one answer of very low, low, medium, high, or very high to represent the degree of urgency in the message from the visual, auditory, and tactile modalities. Step three is to transpose the scores from each category to the space at the end of each row. Step four is to complete steps one, two, and three for questions two through five. Step five is to find the total for each category.

Figure 10-3. Flowchart. Rules for Determining Display Modality. According to this figure, the following three questions should be answered for determining display modality after obtaining the scores for each modality using the sensory modality design tool in figures 10-1 and 10-2. Designers decide which modality to use based upon the modality's point total. Question one asks, did two modalities receive scores of fifteen or greater? If yes, then a combination of the two modalities should be used to display the information. If two modalities did not receive a score of fifteen or greater, then determine whether two modalities received identical scores or scores within one point of each other. If two modalities did that, then a design decision must be made regarding which of the two modalities is most appropriate, such as auditory or visual. If two modalities did not receive identical scores or scores within one point of each other, then determine which modality received the highest score and scored at least two or more points above the other modalities. The highest scoring modality should be used to display the information.

Equation 1. Determining the Appropriate Luminance Uniformity within an Icon. The percent element nonuniformity equals the absolute value of the minimum luminance minus the maximum luminance. This number is then divided by the maximum luminance. Minimum luminance is equal to the smaller luminance value and maximum luminance is equal to the greater luminance value.

Equation 2. Determining the Appropriate Contrast Ratio within an Icon. The contrast ratio equals the luminance maximum divided by the luminance minimum. The luminance maximum is equal to the luminance emitted by the area or element of greatest intensity and the luminance minimum is equal to the luminance emitted by the area or element of least intensity.

Equation 3. Determining the Visual Angle if the Distance and Symbol Height are Known (first equation). This is an equation for determining the visual angle if the distance and symbol height are known. The visual angle equals the arc tan of the symbol height divided by the distance. The symbol height is equal to the height of the symbology. Distance is equal to the distance from the viewer's eyepoint to the display. The visual angle equals the angle in degrees.

Equation 4. Determining the Visual Angle if the Distance and Symbol Height are Known (second equation). This is another equation for determining the visual angle if the distance and symbol height are known. The visual angle equals the 3,438 multiplied by the height, divided by the distance. The symbol height is equal to the height of the symbology. Distance is equal to the distance from the viewer's eyepoint to the display. The visual angle equals the angle in degrees.

Equation 5. Determining the Symbol Height if the Distance and Visual Angle are Known. This is an equation for determining the height of the symbol if the distance and visual angle are known. The height of the symbol equals the tangent of the visual angle multiplied by the distance. The symbol height is equal to the height of the symbology. Distance is equal to the distance from viewer's eyepoint to the display. The visual angle equals the angle in degrees.

Equation 6. Determining the Distance when the Visual Angle and Symbol Height are Known. This is an equation for determining the distance when the visual angle and symbol height are known. The distance is equal to the symbol height divided by the tangent of the visual angle. The symbol height is equal to the height of the symbology. Distance is equal to the distance from the viewer's eyepoint to the display. The visual angle equals the angle in degrees.

Equation 7. Determining the Effects of Color on Icon Legibility. The color contrast metric equals the quantity to the .5 power of 155 times open parentheses the difference in luminance between text (symbology) and background, end parentheses, all squared, plus open parentheses 367 times the difference between the first derivative of U, closed parentheses, squared, plus open parentheses 167 times the difference between the first derivative of V coordinates of text (symbology) and background (per the 1976 CIE UCS), end parentheses, squared.

Equation 8. Determining the Perceived Urgency of Auditory Signals. S equals K multiplied by O to the power of M, where S is the subjective value of perceived urgency rating, K is the intercept of the line of best fit, O is objective value, and M is the slop of the line of best fit.

The corresponding graph shows X and Y axes. The X axis represents the base 10 logarithm of O, where O represents the objective value of a sound parameter. The range of the X axis is 2.6 to 3.2. The Y axis represents the base 10 log of S, where S represents the subjective value of Perceived Urgency rating. The range of the subjective scale is 1 to 100. On the graph, a line of best fit is drawn. The intercept of the best fit line with the Y axis is known as K. M is equal to the slop of the line of best fit. Marks on the graph are found at the following X, Y coordinates: approximately 2.65 and 1.56, 2.78 and 1.64, 2.91 and 1.66, 2.93 and 1.665, 3.0 and 1.76, and 2.9 and 1.76.

Note: The following three equations are accompanied by a diagram, described below.

Equation 9. Preferred Minimum Distance. The preferred minimum distance for the appropriate timing of an instruction is equal to 14.799 added to the sum total of the speed multiplied by 1.637. Speed is in kilometers per hour and distance is in meters.

Equation 10. Ideal Distance. The ideal distance for the appropriate timing of an instruction is equal to 21.307 added to the sum total of the speed multiplied by 1.973. Speed is in kilometers per hour and distance is in meters.

Equation 11. Preferred Maximum Distance. The preferred maximum distance for the appropriate timing of an instruction is equal 37.144 added to the sum total of the speed multiplied by 2.222. Speed is in kilometers per hour and distance is in meters.

These three equations are accompanied by an illustration of an example of the suggested timing for navigational instruction. In this diagram, a green car is shown approaching an intersection. A dotted line and arrow indicates that at the intersection, the car will turn right. Text around the diagram indicates that the vehicle is 150 meters from the intersection and traveling at 48 kilometers per hour. The preferred minimum distance for the navigational information is 93 meters from the intersection. The ideal distance is 116 meters from the intersection, and the preferred maximum distance is 144 meters from the intersection.
