In conjunction with National Transportation Week, Federal Highway Administrator Kenneth R. Wykle and U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater were joined by David Levy, Director and President of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and to inaugurate and view a display of the Rakeman Art Exhibit at the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Carl Rakeman, during 30 years with the Bureau of Public Roads, predecessor of the FHWA, painted a series of 109 illustrations of historic American roads, highways and other transportation modes. Thirty of his paintings will be on display at the U.S. Department of Transportation Building.

Several of the 109 paintings depicting historic transportation made by Mr. Rakeman while employed by BPR can be viewed online.
