Competitive Highway Bridge Program 2019 Grant Awards - Fact Sheets

Alaska
South Seward Highway Bridge Project

CHBP FY 2018 Grant Award: $11,567,000

Recipient: Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities

Project Description

The project will rehabilitate the Snow River West Channel Bridge and Snow River Center Channel Bridge and replace the Victor Creek Bridge along the Seward Highway, which connects Seward and Anchorage. This is the only land route between Anchorage and Seward. These bridges represent critical links within the transportation network.

Project Benefits

The project improves the condition of these three bridges to be in good condition. The project makes it possible to avoid load postings that would increase truck traffic overall, as the result of more trucks carrying smaller loads, and force cargo to travel by barge or air at higher cost. Accelerated bridge construction techniques make it possible to shorten construction time during the busy tourist season. The Seward Highway is a key highway for both freight movement and tourism.
