Smithfield Street Bridge Restoration
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Designer: | Mackin Engineering |
Contractor: | Dick Enterprises |
The 113-year-old Smithfield Street Bridge is a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and National Historic Landmark. Restoring the structure and deck, therefore, required maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the design, while also increasing the bridge's load capacity. The renovation also restored the lenticular truss bridge's original three-color point system, as specified more than a century ago by designer Gustav Lindenthal. Six copper finials, removed decades ago because of structural decay, were also restored, and now crown the top of the bridge's portals.
