A Note on the American Guide Series

The American Guide Series was written in the 1930's by the Writers' Program of the Work Projects Administration. The series, which includes a book on each State, is of particular interest to highway historians. The second half of each book contains a "highways and byways" tour over the State's main roads, including information on the history of the towns along the way, side trips, geography, and, basically, whatever else struck the writers' fancy. Many of the entries include information on the history of the road as well. Travel writers have found these books to be of great value. If your library does not have the American Guide Series, ask the librarian to request an interlibrary loan of the edition you are seeking.
