70th Anniversary of the Interstate

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is excited to celebrate three historic milestones in 2026 – America’s 250th birthday, the 70th anniversary of the Interstate highway system, and the 100th Anniversary of Route 66! From the beginning of the birth of our nation, highway transportation has been pivotal in America’s progress, connectivity and mobility.

From its launch under President Eisenhower in 1956, the Interstate Highway System became the greatest public works project in history and transformed the Nation.

“More than any single action by the government since the end of the war, this one [the Interstate] will change the face of America with straightaways, cloverleaf turns, bridges, and elongated parkways. Its impact on the American economy—the jobs it would produce in manufacturing and construction, the rural areas it would open-up—was beyond calculation.” – President Dwight D. Eisenhower (Mandate for Change, 1963)
