Assessing and Sustaining the Quality of the America's Byways Collection

In 2007 and 2008, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) sponsored a research effort to compile and analyze information on the quality of America's byways and the results of projects funded through the National Scenic Byways Program. These reports were produced under contract with R.D. Mingo and Associates, and any findings or opinions expressed are those of the authors and not necessarily the Federal Highway Administration.

Note: This effort was completed prior to the de-designation of the Tamiami Trail Scenic Highway in Florida as a National Scenic Byway, and statistics and data presented include the Tamiami Trail.

Analyze the Existing America's Byways® Collection: This report describes the America's Byways collection to identify some of the significant characteristics of the collection as a baseline, and to provide a summary of progress.
Identify and Recommend Strategies for Maintaining and Ensuring the Quality of America's Byways: This report includes fifteen issue papers that provide examples, insights, strategies and options for different aspects of the National Scenic Byways Program and its future.
Projects Funded Through the National Scenic Byways Program: This report reviews the accomplishment of the National Scenic Byways Program from a funding perspective, and explores funding issues that should be considered in the future.
Directions for the Program: This report outlines options and recommendations for the future of the National Scenic Byways Program and the America's Byways collection.
