Description

A pedestrian bridge spanning Ga. 400 from Stratford Road to Tower Place Drive provides walkers with direct access to the Buckhead Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) station on Ga. 400. The bridge, located in the median of Georgia 400 at the north end of the Buckhead Station, crosses the interstate and provides pedestrian access to the station on the north end of the station platform. It also offers immediate access to the high-rise condos, upscale apartments, office buildings, retailers, and restaurants that line the highway. The bridge is designed as a glass enclosure with a curved roof to mirror the high-rises that surround it.

An original part of the Ga. 400 development plan, the bridge was removed after engineers found it would be too expensive. The bridge is aimed at restoring connectivity between the east and west sides of Buckhead. In addition to a pedestrian bridge over the northbound and southbound lanes of Ga. 400, the project included a new entrance on the north end of the existing Buckhead Station, along with an elevator/stair tower, sidewalk, and bridge connection on the east side of Ga. 400. The project also provided sidewalk access to elevated walkway from Tower Place to connect to the bridge on the west side of Ga. 400.

It opened in 2014 and provides the more than 3,000 people who live, work, shop, and worship in the area with a practical transit route. The project provided pedestrians from Tower Place Drive and Stratford Road on the north side of Peachtree direct access to both sides of GA 400 and to MARTA’s Buckhead Station without having to walk to Peachtree Road, making existing and future development transit accessible.

Innovations

  • Reconnect the east and west sides of Buckhead physically divided by GA400 and is bounded by Lenox, Peachtree, and Piedmont Roads. Pedestrians have had to walk 10 to 15 minutes out of their way to Peachtree or Lenox roads before they could get across the highway.
  • The project utilized a three-dimensional laser-scanning technology for rendering of bridge elements.
  • Buckhead CID was instrumental in building consensus and support among Buckhead businesses, developers and community leaders.
