Building Information Modeling (BIM) for Infrastructure
Over the last several years, there has been an increased use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) related technologies to improve the project delivery process for highway construction. BIM integrates many technologies and practices that bring digital tools and a data-centric approach for improving lifecycle delivery and management of highway assets. However, the approach for deploying BIM has been typically siloed at each function of the organization or at the project level. BIM implementation to date typically has had a heavy focus on deliverables for construction, rather than data to inform decisions during and after project delivery, but there is so much more to making it a truly lifecycle integration of valuable asset data. This means going beyond the current industry connotation of BIM as synonymous to 3D models. Many State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) recognize the benefits associated with the bigger picture of BIM as a data-centric approach both for project delivery and asset management practices. BIM centers on the idea that data is an asset and that there are efficiencies to be gained when business silos are broken down so that data is accessible throughout a project and asset life cycle.
The objectives of FHWA BIM for Infrastructure program are to:
- Describe BIM for Infrastructure and educate stakeholders.
- Share the implementation of BIM-related technologies and practices of the State DOTs.
- Help State DOTs identify steps to move from one maturity level to the next for a specific area.
