Footnotes

/ Source is Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) summary data reported by the States and Bureau of the Census. The split between urban and rural are estimates based on revisions by States and metropolitan planning organizations to the 1990 and 2000 urban boundaries defined by the Bureau of the Census. California population data are reported exclusively from HPMS.

/ Source is U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis as published in Statistical Abstract of the United States, 2007.

/ Percent Trucks includes: combination trucks, single-unit trucks (with at least 2 axles and 6 tires), and buses. These values are estimates based on percentages of trucks and buses reported in the HPMS summary, universe, and sample data by each State. Please note that the method of calculation was changed for the 2006 data and utilizes the VM-2 and VM-4 tables.

/ Includes roadways owned by the State highway agency. Excludes roadways owned by State toll, State park and other State agencies.

/ Statewide totals for miles, lane-miles, and travel are found in tables HM-20, HM-60 and VM-2.

/ May see differences from prior years; starting in 1999, number of lanes is coded for all systems except rural minor collector and rural/urban local.

/ DVMT (Daily Vehicle-Miles Traveled) is in thousands.

/ AADT means Annual Average Daily Traffic. AADT/Lane is a statewide average.

/ Excludes 788 miles of Federal agency owned roads.

/ Includes 274 miles of miscoded non-Interstate functional system length or rural/urban categorization or both.
