Motor Vehicles

On an annual basis, States gather, assemble and submit aggregate registered vehicle data to FHWA that aim to capture a summary of active motor vehicles, and related information on taxation and fees. The latter are vital to policy and decision-makers in understanding transportation fleet composition trends over time, and the associated revenue yield associated with registration transactions. Ultimately, FHWA staff analyzes, validates, and certifies the data which is then utilized to support Federal-aid system investment analysis and decision-making, and to perform roadway safety/crash and vehicle fuel economy studies among other activities.

States report vehicle registration data to FHWA each year. See Chapter 7. Vehicles in the Highway Statistics Series for annual statistics about registered vehicles by State and by year.
